Born January 7, 1830 in Solingen, Germany
In 1833 , he emigrated with his family to New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA.
In 1853 , he returned to Germany to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.
In 1857 , he returned to America and began his expedition to the West.
In 1863 , he produced "Lander's Peak, Rocky Mountains," which was highly praised.
Died in New York on February 18, 1902 (aged 72)
