Mark Catesby
Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was an English naturalist whose magnum opus, The Natural History of the Carolinas, Florida, and Bahamas (1754), is a magnificent work of natural history. This vibrant collection of paintings contains 220 antique plates that beautifully capture birds, fish, reptiles, insects, mammals, and plants.
Mark Catesby Biography
- Born March 24, 1683 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England
- He was interested in natural history from a young age and taught himself botany and zoology.
- In 1712, he emigrated to the Virginia Colony (now the U.S. state of Virginia).
- In 1719, he returned to England, raised funds, and again traveled to America.
- From 1722 to 1726, he explored the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas, observing and collecting plants and animals.
- Between 1731 and 1747 he published The Natural History of the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas.
- Died in London on December 23, 1749 (aged 66)
