• Born July 15, 1606 in Leiden, Netherlands
• In 1620, he entered the University of Leiden, but later decided to become a painter and studied under Jacob van Swanenburgh.
• Studied under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam around 1624
• In 1625 he returned to Leiden and opened a workshop.
• Around 1631, he moved to Amsterdam and became a successful portrait painter.
• In 1634 he married Saskia van Eulenburgh
• 1642: Created "The Night Watch"
• From the 1650s onwards, he fell into financial difficulties and was declared bankrupt in 1656.
• Died in Amsterdam on October 4, 1669 (aged 63)
