He was associated with the style and subject matter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and made a major contribution to the Arts and Crafts movement through his close collaboration with William Morris . His work depicts myth, legend and religious themes with rich colour and detailed detail, transporting the viewer to a dreamlike world.

- Born August 28, 1833 in Birmingham, England
- He studied theology at Oxford University, but dropped out to become a painter.
- 1856: Studied under Dante Gabriel Rossetti
- In 1861, he co-founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. with William Morris and others.
- In the 1880s, he also designed stained glass and tapestries.
- In 1894, he was created a baronet.
- Died in London on June 17, 1898 (aged 64)
