David Cox (1783-1859) was a prominent English landscape painter, known particularly for his free and expressive watercolor technique.

David Cox Biography

  • Born April 29, 1783 in Birmingham, England.
  • He showed an interest in painting from an early age and taught himself how to paint.
  • In 1804, he moved to London and worked as a stage painter.
  • In the 1810s, he began to seriously produce watercolor paintings.
  • From the 1820s onwards, he travelled around Britain and produced landscape paintings.
  • In 1841, he became a full member of the Society of Watercolour Painters.
  • He died in Birmingham on June 7, 1859, aged 76.
