Yanagiyo Shinsai was an ukiyo-e artist and book illustrator active in the late Edo period . He specialized in landscapes, portraits of beautiful women, actor paintings, and especially monster paintings, and gained popularity for his original style and humorous expressions. His works reflect the culture of the common people in the Edo period, and his works featuring monsters, ghosts, and strange tales have not lost their appeal even today.
