He was one of the founding members of the artists' association "Labor et Aartes" together with other students at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague .

Born on February 8, 1866 in Zworelkespel, Netherlands. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. Moved to Amsterdam in 1884 to study at the School of Arts and Crafts. Participated in the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1890s. Designed the interior of the home of doctor Willem van Hoorn in 1895. Worked in a wide range of fields, including painting, batik, furniture, textiles , wallpaper, glass painting and bookbinding. Died on June 14, 1924 in Overveen, Netherlands (aged 58).
