Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century . She developed close friendships with French Impressionist painters, and while she was influenced by them, she established her own style of painting. She is known for her delicate depictions of women and children, particularly loving scenes between mothers and children.

Born on May 22, 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now Pittsburgh), USA. Entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861. Moved to Paris in 1866 to continue his painting studies . Recognized by Edgar Degas and participated in the Impressionist exhibition in 1877. Influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e in the 1890s, established his own printmaking techniques. Died on June 14, 1926 in Mesnil-Téribu, France (aged 82).
