- Born September 29, 1743 in Doesburg, Netherlands
- Enlisted in the Scottish Brigade in 1751
- Served in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) from 1772 to 1776
- Served in the Cape Colony (now South Africa) from 1777 to 1795
- Appointed Governor of the Cape Colony
- Committed suicide in Cape Town on 25 October 1795 (aged 52)
