Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a gifted German naturalist, entomologist, and scientific illustrator. She became famous for her careful observation and depiction of insects and plants, especially their life cycles. She undertook scientific expeditions, including a perilous journey to Suriname, South America, where she extensively documented the diverse plant and animal life. The detailed drawings published in her important book, Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, continue to inspire scientists and artists to this day.

Born on April 2, 1647 in Frankfurt, Germany. From an early age, he was interested in insects and plants, and began observing and drawing them. He learned painting from his father-in-law, Jacob Marel, who was a pupil of the still-life painter Georg Flegel. In 1675, he published his first collection of natural history illustrations. In 1699, he set off on an expedition to Suriname in South America with his daughter. In 1705, he published "Illustrated Guide to the Metamorphosis of Insects in Suriname." He died in Amsterdam on January 13, 1717 (aged 69).
