Adolphe Leon Willette
Adolphe Léon Willette was an illustrator , printmaker , and painter active in France from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He is particularly known for his posters for the Montmartre cabaret "Le Chat Noir" and his magazine illustrations, which portrayed the atmosphere of Paris during the Belle Époque with a light and stylish touch. He is also known as an anti-Semitic caricaturist.
Adolphe Leon Willett Biography
- 1857 7 Born on the 30th of this month in Châlons-en-Champagne, France
- Around 1875, he went to Paris and studied under Alexandre Cabanel, a leading academic painter, at the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts). (However, he later moved away from that style and established his own style.)
- From the early 1880s onwards, he became a regular at the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir, where he designed posters and decorations.
- He contributed illustrations to satirical magazines such as "Le Chat Noir" and "Le Courrier Français."
- He also illustrated the radical anti-Semitic newspaper La Libre Parole, founded by Édouard Drumont.
- In 1889, he founded his own satirical magazine, Le Pierrot, in Montmartre.
- In his later years (especially during World War I) he also produced religious and patriotic works.
- Died in Paris on February 4, 1926 (aged 68)
