Ernst Haeckel
Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German biologist, philosopher, and artist. He played an important role in spreading Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in Germany, and is also known for proposing the theory of recapitulation, which states that "ontogeny repeats phylogeny." Haeckel created detailed and beautiful illustrations of microorganisms and marine life he observed under a microscope , and his works combine scientific accuracy with artistic beauty.

- He studied medicine at the Universities of Berlin and Würzburg.

- Between 1899 and 1904 he published "Kunstformen der Natur" (Artistic Forms of Nature).
- He died in Jena on August 9, 1919 (aged 85).
