Edvard Munch
Edvard Munch is a representative Norwegian painter active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He is known as a pioneer of Expressionism, using intense colors and distorted forms to express human anxieties, loneliness, and the fear of death.
Edvard Munch Biography
- Born December 12, 1863 in Roten, southeastern Norway.
- In 1879 he entered the School of Arts and Crafts in Christiania (now Oslo).
- In 1885, he went to Paris to study and was influenced by the Impressionists.
- In 1892 he created his masterpiece, "The Scream"
- Died on January 23, 1944 in Ekli near Oslo (aged 80)
Representative works
- The Scream (1893)
- The Sick Child (1886)
- The Kiss (1892)
- Madonna (1894-95)
In his series of works, including "The Scream," Munch used distorted forms and strong color contrasts to express human suffering and anxiety. His bold use of primary colors such as blue and red made him a pioneer of the new art movement known as "Expressionism."
In his later years he gained fame as Norway's national painter, and his acclaim continued after his death. Munch's art is still highly regarded today as a powerful sign of the arrival of a new artistic movement at the end of the 19th century.
