Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German biologist, philosopher, and artist. He played an important role in spreading Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in Germany, and is also known for proposing the theory of recapitulation, which states that "ontogeny repeats phylogeny." - He studied medicine at the Universities of Berlin and Würzburg.

- In 1866, he published "General Morphology" and proposed the theory of repetition.
- Between 1899 and 1904 he published "Kunstformen der Natur" (Artistic Forms of Nature).
- He died in Jena on August 9, 1919 (aged 85).
