Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany on February 8, 1880. He grew up in an environment surrounded by art: his father was a landscape painter and his uncle was an art collector.

In 1900, he entered the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, but was dissatisfied with the academic education and dropped out in 1903. He then went to Paris, where he furthered his studies by copying paintings at the Louvre and other museums. Around this time, he was impressed by the works of Van Gogh and Gauguin, and developed an interest in color expression.

He returned to Munich in 1907 and began to work as a painter in earnest. In 1910 he became a founding member of the Association of New Artists in Munich and deepened his ties with Expressionist painters.

In 1911, he formed "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) with Wassily Kandinsky. This group went beyond the framework of representational painting and pursued inner expression through color and form. Marc used animals as his main motif, and expressed the inner world of animals and their harmony with nature through vivid colors and strong lines .

However, when World War I broke out in 1914, Marc was drafted and served on the Western Front. He was killed in action on March 4, 1916, at the age of 36 , after being hit in the head by shrapnel during the Battle of Verdun .

Although his career as a painter was short, Marc's work, with its vivid colors and unique expression, had a major impact on 20th century art. His work explores the spiritual connections between nature, humans, and animals, and deeply questions the state of humans in modern society.

He visualized inner spirituality through contrasting color planes and distorted forms. Marc's work became one of the origins of 20th century abstract painting.
