Sayen excels at expressing light and color, and his open, dynamic style is outstanding. He has created many works depicting cityscapes and ports in the eastern United States, and his free brushstrokes and vivid use of colors that make use of impressionist techniques shine through. He particularly vividly captures scenes of sunrise and sunset, and beautifully depicts atmospheric conditions. He is regarded as a pioneer of American impressionism, as he was the first American painter to be strongly influenced by French impressionism. He also had a great influence on later artists.
