- Born December 20, 1858 in Indonesia (then Dutch Indies)
- In 1882 he entered the Academie in Brussels.
- Established the Symbolist style in the mid-1890s
- Died March 14, 1928 in the Netherlands

Toorop's works often depict women with a mystical and spiritual aspect, and are characterized by their outlines emphasized by lines and their flat, decorative designs.
Toorop's early Symbolist works were influenced by Impressionism and Japonism, but in his later works, his technique became simpler and he became more closely associated with Theosophy and Theosophical thought. Toorop's works, which visualized inner spirituality, also had a major influence on the avant-garde art of the time. He is highly regarded as one of the leading Symbolist artists.
