Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres Biography

Born August 29, 1780 in Montauban, southwestern France.
From the age of 11, he studied painting at the Toulouse Art School.
In 1797, he went to Paris and studied under the master of neoclassicism, Jacques-Louis David.
In 1801, he won the Prix de Rome and studied in Rome.
From 1806 to 1820, he worked in Rome, studying Raphael and ancient art.
In 1824, he returned to Paris and exhibited his painting The Vow of Louis XIII at the Salon, which brought him instant fame.
1825: Awarded the Légion d'honneur
From 1835 to 1841, he again resided in Rome, where he served as director of the French Academy in Rome.
Died in Paris on January 14, 1867 (aged 86)
