- Born in 1777 in Tilburg, Netherlands.
- He learned painting from his father, Nicholas Frederic Knipp.
- He gained fame for his landscape paintings, especially those of Italian landscapes.
- In 1808, he moved to Paris and exhibited at the Salon de Paris.
- He became the court painter of Napoleon I.
- He died in Berlin in 1847 (aged 70).
