Mary Vaux Walcott

Mary Vaux Walcott (1860-1940), sometimes called the "Audubon of botany," was an American artist who produced beautiful hand-drawn floral illustrations. From an early age, she loved to draw flowers, and her passion for botany and painting developed through her travels to the Rocky Mountains. Her talent for capturing the blooming of the rare alpine plant, arnica, led her to dedicate herself to botanical illustration.

• Born on July 31, 1860 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
• He grew up in a wealthy Quaker family and was exposed to nature and art from an early age.
• From 1887 onwards, he visited the Rocky Mountains every summer to observe and sketch plants.
• At the request of botanists, he created watercolors to document rare plants.
• In 1925, the Smithsonian Institution published a five-volume botanical encyclopedia called North American Wild Flowers.
• He died on August 22, 1940 (aged 80).
