Sina (Sientje) van Houten

Sina van Houten (1834-1909) was a rare Dutch woman painter . As the wife of the famous Dutch marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag, she provided him with emotional support. However, after the unfortunate loss of their only child, she took up painting.

Born in Groningen in 1834 Married Hendrik Willem Mesdag in 1859 Lost her only child in the 1870s After that, she began painting Died in The Hague in 1909 (aged 75)

Van Houten's style and achievements

Van Houten's works are mainly still lifes and landscapes, and many of her works depicting flowers and the sea are particularly well-known. Her works are characterized by realistic depictions and a delicate sense of color, and exude a calm and serene atmosphere.

After the death of her husband , Van Houten continued to paint in earnest and exhibited in several exhibitions. Although she was not able to establish herself as a female painter, her work is currently being reevaluated.
