He studied painting at the National Academy of Design and was influenced by Albert Bierstadt and Asher Brown Durand.
His work was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1881.
In 1885, he won the Hall Garden Prize at the National Academy of Design.
In his early years, he painted many landscapes of the northeastern United States, such as the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains.
