William James Glackens was an American painter and illustrator active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century . As a leading member of the Ashcan School, he painted city life, landscapes, and people with vivid colors and powerful brushstrokes. His work is influenced by Impressionism, but is characterized by its own unique realism and bold composition.

Born on March 13, 1870 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1891. Travelled to Paris in 1895 and studied at the Academie Julian. Returned to the US in 1896 and worked as an illustrator for a newspaper. Began working in earnest as a painter in the early 1900s. Participated in the "The Eight" exhibition in 1908, and attracted attention as a representative painter of the Ashcan School. Died on May 22, 1938 in Westport, Connecticut, USA (aged 68).
