John Frederick Herring
John Frederick Hering (1795-1865) was a Victorian-era British painter, sign-maker, and coachman. He is best known for his paintings of racing horses and rural landscapes. Hering spent the first 18 years of his life in London, England, where he developed his interest in horses and painting. His works depict equestrian events with warm tones and a smooth, delicate touch, as well as other farm animals such as cows , ducks, and goats .
John Frederick Herring Biography
- Born September 12, 1795 in London, England.
- From an early age, he showed an interest in horses and painting.
- In 1814 he moved to York and worked as a sign maker and coachman.
- From the late 1810s, he taught himself painting and began painting horses.
- In the 1830s, he achieved success as a painter of racing horse portraits.
- In 1845 he became animal painter to the Duchess of Kent.
- He died at Tonbridge on 23 September 1865, aged 70.
