James Bolton
James Bolton (1735-1799) was an English artist, sculptor and self-taught botanist. He was a mycologist and the author of several botanical books, including the first English book on fungi. His brother Thomas Bolton was also a naturalist, and both were patronized by Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, a collector of art and natural history.

- Born in 1735 near Warley, West Yorkshire, England.
- He began his career as a weaver, but later became a self-taught art teacher.
- He eventually became a pub owner in his hometown of Warley.
- He became a successful mycologist and published several botanical books, including the first book on fungi in Britain.
- Died January 7, 1799 (age 63-64)
