John Singer Sargent was an American painter active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He produced outstanding works in a wide range of genres, including portraits, landscapes, and watercolors . His portraits of members of upper class society are particularly highly regarded for their gorgeous brushwork and refined expression.

John Singer Sargent Biography

  • Born January 12, 1856 in Florence, Italy
  • In 1874, he moved to Paris and studied in the studio of Carolus-Duran.
  • In the late 1870s, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris and attracted attention.
  • In the 1880s, he moved to London and became a successful portrait painter.
  • In the 1890s, he returned to America and produced portraits and murals.
  • Since the 1900s, he has also been actively involved in watercolor painting.
  • Died April 14, 1925, London, England (aged 69)

Sargent's style and achievements
