The Costume of Yorkshire

George Walker's (1781-1856) Yorkshire Costume (1814) gives us a glimpse into 19th century Yorkshire. This beautiful collection of public domain illustrations provides an insight into the costumes, occupations and lifestyles of the period. It also includes the first published illustration of a steam locomotive, built by Murray & Blenkinsop in 1812.

George Walker Biography

Born in 1781 in Leeds, Yorkshire , England .
Active as a painter and writer.
He was interested in the scenery and customs of Yorkshire, and left behind many works.
In 1814, he published Yorkshire Costume.
He died in 1856 (aged 75).

Characteristics and influence of this book

"Yorkshire Costume" is a collection of 40 hand-coloured copperplate prints and accompanying text that vividly depict the costumes and lives of people from various professions in Yorkshire at the time. A wide range of people are depicted, including fishermen, weavers, farmers and miners, and the details of their work and the characteristics of their clothing are explained in detail.

Of particular note is the illustration of a steam locomotive built by Murray & Blenkinsop in 1812. This was the world's first published illustration of a steam locomotive and is a valuable document symbolizing the technological innovation of 19th century Britain as the Industrial Revolution progressed.

This book is a valuable resource for researchers of 19th century Yorkshire society and culture, and its beautiful illustrations will interest students of fashion and industrial history as well as the general public.
