Gustave Courbet was a painter active in 19th century France. As one of the founders of realism , he advocated painting reality as it is, which had a major impact on the art world of his time. His uncompromising attitude and innovative style of painting had a major impact on the development of modern art, including the later Impressionism. Gustave Courbet Biography
