Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was a French painter and sculptor active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He is known as one of the leading Impressionist artists, but he described himself as a " realist " or " independent ." Edgar Degas Biography

Born July 19, 1834, in Paris, France, to a wealthy banking family.
In 1855, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts).
From 1856, he traveled to Italy and studied Renaissance art for several years.
In 1874, he participated in the first Impressionist exhibition, and exhibited in seven of the next eight.
From the 1880s onwards, due in part to his failing eyesight, he began to focus on sculpture and pastel painting.
Died in Paris on September 27, 1917 (aged 83)
