Frederick Childe Hassam Biography

Born October 17, 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts
From a young age he worked as a wood engraver and illustrator in Boston.
In 1883, he traveled to Europe, where he came into contact with Impressionist works, particularly in England and France.
From 1886 to 1889, he lived in Paris and studied painting at the Academie Julian.
During this period, he produced many works depicting the streets of Paris and the surrounding landscapes.
In 1889, he returned to the United States and established his base of operations in New York.
In 1898, he participated in the founding of the Ten American Painters (commonly known as the Ten), a group exhibition that featured "the ten greatest American artists."
He was especially praised for his paintings of New York cityscapes and New England landscapes.
Died August 27, 1935, East Hampton, New York (age 75)
