Frederick Childe Hassam was one of the leading American impressionist painters active from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. He is known in particular for his works that depict cityscapes, New England landscapes, and flower-filled gardens, using bright colors and light brushstrokes. His work contributed greatly to the acceptance and development of impressionism in America.

- Born October 17, 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts
- From a young age he worked as a wood engraver and illustrator in Boston.
- In 1883, he traveled to Europe, where he came into contact with Impressionist works, particularly in England and France.
- From 1886 to 1889, he lived in Paris and studied painting at the Academie Julian.
- During this period, he produced many works depicting the streets of Paris and the surrounding landscapes.
- In 1889, he returned to the United States and established his base of operations in New York.
- In 1898, he participated in the founding of the Ten American Painters (commonly known as the Ten), a group exhibition that featured "the ten greatest American artists."
