  • Born October 17, 1859 in Dorchester, Massachusetts
  • From a young age he worked as a wood engraver and illustrator in Boston.
  • In 1883, he traveled to Europe, where he came into contact with Impressionist works, particularly in England and France.
  • From 1886 to 1889, he lived in Paris and studied painting at the Academie Julian.
  • During this period, he produced many works depicting the streets of Paris and the surrounding landscapes.
  • In 1889, he returned to the United States and established his base of operations in New York.
  • In 1898, he participated in the founding of the Ten American Painters (commonly known as the Ten), a group exhibition that featured "the ten greatest American artists."
  • He was especially praised for his paintings of New York cityscapes and New England landscapes.
  • Died August 27, 1935, East Hampton, New York (age 75)
