Alfred Henry Maurer

Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932) was an American modernist painter from New York, known for his avant-garde works. After moving to Paris, France in 1897, his style evolved from traditional painting to modern art.

Born April 21, 1868 in New York City
Studied at the Art Students League of New York
In 1897, he moved to Paris and studied at the Academie Julian.
Won the gold medal at the Carnegie International Exhibition in 1901.
In the 1920s, he produced works influenced by Cubism and Fauvism.
Died in New York on August 4, 1932 (aged 64)

Maurer's style and achievements

Maurer began his career by painting genre scenes in a realistic style, but after moving to Paris he turned to modern art. His works are influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, and are characterized by vivid colors and bold forms. In later years, he moved to more abstract expressions, producing works that express emotions and inner thoughts.

Although Maurer was not highly acclaimed during his lifetime, after his death his innovative work was reevaluated and he became recognized as a key figure in American Modernism.
