Vilhelm Hammershoi
Vilhelm Hammershoi is a representative Danish introverted painter. His representative works are interior paintings filled with a tranquil and introspective atmosphere. Hammershoi's works have an excellent balance of light and shadow, composition, and color, and embody the colors and simple beauty of Scandinavia.
Biography of Vilhelm Hammershoi
- Born May 16, 1864 in Copenhagen
- Entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1879
- From the late 1880s onwards, he began to specialise in interior paintings.
- Died 16 February 1916, Copenhagen
Representative works
- "The White Door" 1904

At the center of the work is an enclosed interior space, with the figures merely seen from behind and small in size. However, the detailed composition, including the way the light is applied and the arrangement of the furniture, creates an atmosphere of deep silence and introspection. Hammershøi's realistic depictions and precise composition perfectly express the inner beauty of Scandinavia. He began to receive high praise in his later years, and became known as a master of 20th century Scandinavian painting.
