Leo Gestel

Leo Gestel was a painter active in the Netherlands from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Influenced by various avant-garde art movements of the time, such as Post-Impressionism , Fauvism , Cubism , and Expressionism , he established his own unique style of painting. He is particularly known for his landscapes and portraits, which feature vivid colors and bold brushstrokes, and he made a major contribution to the development of modern Dutch art .

Leo Hestel Biography

Born November 22, 1881 in Woerden, Netherlands
He learned painting from his uncle and studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
He began working as a painter in Amsterdam around 1904.
In the early 1910s, he visited Paris and was influenced by Fauvism and Cubism.
In 1911, he founded the Modern Art Circle with Piet Mondrian and Jan Sluijters.
Participated in the "Elster-Helpst-Salon" exhibition in Berlin in 1913
Since the 1920s, he has pursued his own unique style, focusing on landscapes and still lifes.
In the 1930s, he moved towards a more expressionistic style.
Died on November 26, 1941 in Hilversum (aged 60)
