Henri Matisse Biography

Born December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, northern France.
He initially aspired to be a lawyer, but while recovering from an illness he discovered his passion for painting and decided to switch to painting.
In 1891, he went to Paris to study painting at the Académie Julian, and then studied under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts.
In 1905, he attracted attention at the Salon d'Automne as a leader of Fauvism.
Since the 1910s, he has established his own unique style with vivid colors and decorative composition.
Since the 1940s, he has been actively involved in paper cutting and exploring new areas of expression.
Died in Nice on November 3, 1954 (aged 84)
