Edvard Munch Biography

  • Born December 12, 1863 in Røten, southeastern Norway
  • In 1879 he entered the School of Arts and Crafts in Christiania (now Oslo).
  • In 1885, he went to Paris to study and was influenced by the Impressionists.

Representative works

In his series of works, including "The Scream," Munch used distorted forms and strong color contrasts to express human suffering and anxiety. His bold use of primary colors such as blue and red made him a pioneer of the new art movement known as "Expressionism."

In his later years he achieved fame as a Norwegian national painter, and his acclaim continued even after his death. Munch's art is still highly regarded today as a powerful herald of the arrival of a new artistic movement at the end of the 19th century.
