Mark Catesby

Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was an English naturalist whose magnum opus, The Natural History of the Carolinas, Florida, and Bahamas (1754), is a magnificent work of natural history. This vibrant collection of paintings contains 220 antique plates that beautifully capture birds, fish, reptiles, insects, mammals, and plants.

Born March 24, 1683 in Sudbury, Suffolk, England
He was interested in natural history from a young age and taught himself botany and zoology.
In 1712, he emigrated to the Virginia Colony (now the U.S. state of Virginia).
In 1719, he returned to England, raised funds, and again traveled to America.
From 1722 to 1726, he explored the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas, observing and collecting plants and animals.
Between 1731 and 1747 he published The Natural History of the Carolinas, Florida, and the Bahamas.
Died in London on December 23, 1749 (aged 66)
