Thomas Eakins Biography

• Born July 25, 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
• Studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1861 to 1866
• From 1866 to 1870, he studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts (National School of Fine Arts) under Jean-Léon Gérôme.
• In 1870, he returned to Philadelphia and produced portraits, sports such as rowing, and medical subjects.
• From 1876, he taught at his alma mater, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and mentored the next generation of artists.
• In 1886, he resigned from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts due to a dispute over educational policy.
• He continued his artistic endeavors in Philadelphia and produced numerous works, mainly portraits.
• Died June 25, 1916, Philadelphia (aged 71)
