Not only did he contribute to botanical research, but his detailed and beautiful botanical illustrations are also highly regarded as works of art.   • Born February 28, 1817 in Glasgow, Scotland
  • Worked as a textile designer in the 1830s
  • In 1837 he moved to London and became an assistant to the botanical artist William Jackson Hooker.
  • In 1841 he became the painter for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew .
  • Died in London on January 14, 1877 (aged 59)
