Born February 28, 1817 in Glasgow, Scotland
Worked as a textile designer in the 1830s
In 1837 he moved to London and became an assistant to the botanical artist William Jackson Hooker.
In 1841 he became the painter for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew .
Died in London on January 14, 1877 (aged 59)
