Gustave Courbet Biography

Born June 10, 1819 in Ornans, Franche-Comté, eastern France.
In 1839, he went to Paris and initially studied law, but later switched to painting.
In the 1840s, he studied at the Louvre, copying the works of the great masters.
He resonated with the February Revolution of 1848, and thereafter began to reflect socialist ideas in his works.
His Burial at Ornans, which he painted between 1849 and 1850, caused controversy at the Salon and drew attention as a pioneer of realism .
In 1855, after his works such as "The Artist's Studio" were rejected from the Paris World's Fair, he built the "Pavilion of Realism" near the fair and held a solo exhibition there.
In the 1860s, he published a series of controversial works, including "The Origin of the World."
In 1871, he participated in the Paris Commune and was later imprisoned for his role in the destruction of the Vendôme Column.
1873: Exile in Switzerland
Died on December 31, 1877 at La Tour-de-Peils, Switzerland (aged 58)
